You are invited to attend the always festive and popular ASURA Annual Holiday Potluck this year being held outdoors in Papago Park Tempe, The park is just south of Curry Road at College (see map below). With the unfortunate cancellation of the fall Meet and Greet this event will finally allow members to visit with former ASU colleagues and with new friends lthey've made - or would like to make. The event is also open to non ASURA members so bring your spouse/partner/friends and enjoy.

Besides enjoying the company of thier colleagues some might enjoy a little volleyball or basketball (bring your own ball). For the less energetic there will be croquet (formal croquet attire not required). Finally for the young at heart there are swings and slides.

    With respect to potluck:

      • ASURA will supply plates, cups,, "silverware", napkins, and drinks (water / pop).
      • Attendees won't have access to electricity or a sink so they must be prepared to take their dirty dish and serving utensils home.
      • There are charcoal grills available.
      • Park rules prohibit glass containers and amplified sound.

ASURA is looking to get an approximate count for set-up, beverages, etc., so please register for this event, click on the "Register" button to the left to register, and please register by Wednesday, December 1.

    Happy Holidays to All!

The time has come when you’ve decided it would be a good idea to downsize your life and your physical living environment.  Many questions arise as you make this decision, such as

    • “Why do I want to do this?”
    • “Where do I begin to plan for this move?”
    • “What type of housing would best fit the next phase of my life?
    • “What amenities do I need and what would be nice to have?”
    • “What kind of social activities do I want to have?”
    • “What do I do with all this stuff I’ve accumulated over the years?”

To answer these questions, and many more that haven’t been listed, a panel of ASURA members will gather to discuss their experiences with downsizing!  Ruth Jones, Don and Alleen Nilsen, and David Schwalm will share their stories with seminar participants and address other questions that may come up. Sue Henderson will focus on the “What do I do with all my stuff?” question by providing information on strategies and organizations that are there to assist with this task.

Each year, thousands of children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.  Many of these children become lost in a complex child welfare system, moving from one temporary home to another.  A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer speaks up for the best interests of a child who has experienced abuse or neglect to ensure he or she has a safe, loving and permanent home.

During this session, Roger Lurie, Member of the ASU Retiree’s Association will be joined by Heidi Dwigun and Lawrence Falvey from Voices for CASA Children to provide an overview of CASA.
